Certain classes of journalism (sports journalism, financial journalism) are already automated. I don't really see why stories can't be generated from wire reports on crime, politics etc in the same way.

Advancements in NLP and the formulaic nature of most reporting leaves it vulnerable to automation despite being an ostensibly soft field
