Of course, this doesn't mean that all game designers will be jobless. However, the industry is poised for a significant transformation.

I envision game design becoming user-centric, accessible to everyone. Here's how I think it will work: Imagine you're a person who enjoys video games but has never programmed in your life. That's perfectly fine, as the AI can handle everything for you. All you need to do is convey the concept of the game to the AI, and it will bring it to life.

Want to get specific? The AI will enable you to configure the game mechanics, assets, art style, and everything else according to your imagination. In this future, games will be created by anyone and everyone.

With the addition of custom GPTs, this surely seems like the future we are headed towards. This won't be limited to only video games but will apply to everything.

i mean AI can be pretty complex, but making the code for a video game without any editing on the software via human input would be near impossible with the millions of lines of code needed to program a game

There will be services that will design and develop on the spot simple games like angry birds with little gamplay twists or aestetich variance like the birds are angry rocks with big eyebrows. But how will a machine create novel and complex games without grounding itself in something that already exist (always speaking in the near future)?

And even if we are talking of 30/40 years from now, if machines can create extraordinary games, why should we, humans, stop making them? art expression, and communication makes us happy. (and if they can make extraordinary games it means it can do anything and replace anything so why should we care?)

it's a small chance because game development is a very complex and artistic process that requires art, design and engineering. Game developers have to work closely together and find the "fun" in the game, I don't see how you would teach a robot how to find "fun" gameplay.

I am learning aspects of this career and plan to venture into it in the next few years. However, this year, I've been questioning if that's the right thing to do.

This is because of how AI has been able to create even 3D models and full stories. I fear that it won't even be 10 years before some company can employ AI to make games instead of me.

This is a job that will never truly reach full automation, but some parts of it can and will eventually become AI-assisted.

When designing a game, a game developer has to produce new bits of code and create artwork/animations, something AI is incapable of as of now.

Most game developers even incorporate a story into their game, and AI is currently incapable of writing a comprehensible script.
